Doundale!: A Guide For Black Immigrants Navigating Money & The System In The United States
Understanding the basics of personal finance is crucial for anyone living in the United States, but especially for Black immigrants who tend to be more financially vulnerable. "Doundale" is a word derived from Wolof which means to live and thrive...
The book outlines how to set up a holistic financial management plan within the socio-economic context experienced by Black immigrants so they not only survive, but thrive by understanding the rules to the game.
"Your generation, your parents’ income, values held, part of the world, state of the economy, power, and circumstance are all factors that can impact how you view and interact with money.” The most important thing is to know what your relationship status with money is, because having that insight will allow you to customize your approach to financial management."
"The fact of the matter is, debt isn’t inherently good or bad (right or wrong), rather it comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages include building credit, accruing points to fly, cash back, special perks for car rental or airport travel."
"You don’t need to have your full budget or all of it figured out at once. While this journey can be challenging, the consequences of not having a plan is so much worse than the discomfort of creating a plan. So, start slow, take your time, and listen to your emotions and most importantly: ask for help!"
"It’s common for immigrants to send money to family outside the country on a regular basis to help. While this is a valuable and noble gesture, this should really be practiced in a sustainable way that you can afford, and allows you to take care of your basic needs. Otherwise, it is martyrdom. I mention this because if you find yourself not being able to pay your rent and needing to cut expenses in order to create margin, consider sending less money for that month, or several months, until you are able to afford it again."
